Estate Planning across borders
Wills, trusts, gifts and inheritance — coordinated across the countries where you, your children, and your assets live.
We work with specialist estate counsel in Austria, the UK, the US and across the EU to coordinate wills, succession planning and lifetime gifting strategies.
Austria has no inheritance or gift tax — abolished in 2008 and not (yet) reintroduced. Estates pass to heirs free of a dedicated succession tax, which is a genuine planning advantage for families based here.
Real estate is the exception: inherited Austrian property still triggers Grunderwerbsteuer (a tiered real estate transfer tax) and a 1.1% land registry fee. Forced heirship rules, the EU Succession Regulation, UK IHT and US estate tax all interact with the Austrian position — usually badly, unless they're planned together.
What would your estate actually cost in Austria?
Austria has no inheritance tax — but real estate transfers still cost.
Estimate the Grunderwerbsteuer (real estate transfer tax) and 1.1% registration fee due on inherited Austrian property. Cash, securities and other assets pass tax-free.
- Inheritance tax
- €0 — abolished 2008
- Grunderwerbsteuer (Stufentarif)
- €4.250
- Registration fee (1.1%)
- €4.400
Illustrative only. Assumes gratuitous family transfer at property value; special valuation rules, exemptions and the EU Succession Regulation may materially change the outcome.
